Community Shield 2013

Manchester United vs Wigan

A professional performance from United today, they never really got out of first gear and Wigan provided little threat in attack.  Over the course of the game, there weren't many chances created.  However, it was enjoyable and was pleasing seeing United defend well, pass well (not so much from the back) and the team work hard.  The first half hour was the most positive from United and then they eased off.  They came back to life again later in the second half.  All in all very comfortable.  Some nice moves at times and made good use of subs to give most players a chance.  Evra impressed today with his constant running and willingness to win the ball back.  He got forward a-lot, set up the first goal of the game.  He was productive last season, more of the same would be good and David Moyes does like his attacking full backs.  Anderson made a good impact when he came on.  Though his final ball was a bit off, Zaha was very positive and did well considering he was closely marked and doubled up on.  The Main man Robin van Persie claimed the two goals in the game, the second was an own goal.  He'll be pleased with the first as he doesn't score that many headers.  It was quite far out too. Was a quiet game from him but he was there when it mattered. He really is going to be vital for United this season.  Valencia is back to his old number 25 again, it is being feverishly looked into.  However, it is a good move as it looked like he lost so much confidence last season and it could be in part due to the pressure that the seven shirt brings.  Michael Carrick was named man of the match, can't be stressed enough the importance of him to United.  He showed good leadership particularly when the younger players came on.  He played with his usual calmness and dictated the game well, succeeded in putting a number of teasing balls into the feet of the forwards.  It was good seeing faith being put in the younger players with Jones and Zaha starting.  Adnan Januzaj came on with seven minutes to go, which wasn't much time to make an impression but brilliant that he got a run out.  Moyes has an excellent record introducing youth into the first team, hopefully this continues at United. The only downside was injury to Rafael, hopefully it is not a hamstring as has been mentioned.  David Moyes and United have got off to a good start.  It was important that the team did that.  The real tests are yet to come.  The Premier League kicks off next Saturday away to Swansea.  A tricky side with an excellent home record it won't be an easy game like today's that is for sure.

It was a pity that Wigan could not provide more of a challenge.  They held possession for periods in the game but did little with the ball, mostly passing it between their defenders.  With the fixture congestion in the Championship it will certainly be a slog for them.  They do have the Europa league to look forward to, though their priority must be promotion.  It stands in their favour that Coyle has experience of that.  Rate Coyle and think he has recruited some good players that have improved the side.  Holt will do well in the Championship, a right battering ram and he's certainty to get 20+ goals at the level.  In this match they were unfortunate to have injuries at the back and be without 3 CB's, including their captain.  They seem to have enough in their team to go on and half a good season, depth is important and they have acquired that.  Seem to remember last season, them having a-lot of problems with injured defenders.  Their fans will be hoping that they have a little more luck where that is concerned.  They showed that they have a good threat on the counter.  Reading around their fans are feeling very positive about the team and this seasons prospects.   As much as they were sorry to lose Martinez, it has been said that under Coyle they are already more direct.  Best of luck to Wigan and will certainly look out for their results.
